Lifetime Achiever

Ken Humphrey fell in love with soccer in 1970 when he worked England for two years.  In 1974 he approached Greeley City Council about forming a youth soccer league in Greeley.   The Council was not able to find the funding so Ken decided to start his own league in 1975.  13-foreign born and 22 American-born adults became the core volunteers of the Greeley Soccer Association (GSA).  With help of the Greeley Recreation Department and Weld County School District #6, the program wouldn’t have existed.  In the spring of 1975, he had 108 participates, all boys.

The official year of GSA was 1977 with over 500 boys and 175 girls.  A group of athletes wanted to compete at a competitive level and Ken assisted the Greeley Bootleggers in establishing their organization in 1977.  Ken went on to referee, play, announce and establish other youth soccer program but his greatest honor has been provided by Greeley Bootleggers who established a Sportsmanship award in his name in 1982.

Over 70 athletes have received the Ken Humphrey Sportsmanship Award.
